If part-time employees have two or more jobs, specifically part-time jobs, most likely the company does not have or provide benefits for part-timers. Benefits should be provided to part-time employees and not just to full time employees. Part-time benefits should be proportional to hours worked. Part-time pay rates should be equivalent to full time pay rates. Valuing part-timers means taking good care of part-timers. Cross training part-timers could provide smooth support and coverage when other employees are absent and especially for longer absences for vacation, illnesses, parental leave and any other types of leave.They could provide first hand testimony of the company’s culture and appreciation of the value part-timers bring as well as the benefits and flexibility that the company provides. Part-timers can be good ambassadors for the organization and refer other potential candidates to apply for jobs.Part-timers (especially those with longevity) can be good trainers of new hires and a source of historical information regarding how or why things are done the way they are done. Recruiting and hiring are some of an organization’s largest expen$es. If there is increased demand for employee hours in an organization, current in-house part-timers could be the first go-to supply source (if they want more hours) before recruiting from the outside.There are many benefits for utilizing part-timers… Some part-timers have young families, older parents or family members with disabilities that they provide care for which precludes full time work.They need/want to continue to stay engaged in the workforce for a variety of reasons including wanting to still feel valuable to society and contribute, wanting to stay engaged and mentally stimulated. Older persons or retirees do not want to completely retire.Prefer part-time for work/life integration.Due to mental, emotional or physical issues, full time work would be too much for a particular person and the quality of their work would decrease with increased work hours.There are many reasons that people may want/need part-time work… Hiring part-timers will help alleviate the current staffing shortage. Many jobs/positions are structured as full time but could be restructured into several part-time positions or job sharing opportunities as solutions. In particular, this can affect whether they can actually function well in a full time position or be more successful while working fewer hours in a part time position. This can be especially challenging if there are medication changes that the body and mind are adjusting to which can affect the person’s ability to work. People with mental health issues need to be able to continue to have mental health appointments, and the medications can greatly affect appetite and energy levels. Increasingly, a large percentage of today’s youth, young adults and not-so-young adults are experiencing mental health issues as never before. There are many hard working and smart young people out there making a difference including my own adult children. I have heard people say that young people are lazy. I think if employers are only looking for full time employees and cannot find good ones, they are immediately excluding a huge population source of good candidates namely part-timers. I hear constantly across all industries that employers cannot find “good” employees. This paradigm has majorly opened up the work from home (WFH) options as never before.Įlevating part-time work is another paradigm shift and the time for this is now.Īn awareness has come to mind regarding part-timers and the value they add to an organization which also contributes to process improvement, business and organizational transformation, and long term sustainability and success.
